Schwimmhalle Ilmenau, Thüringen
The new swimming pool building in Ilmenau, Thuringen combines complex geometry and simple design. It houses a 25m training pool, diving pool with 3m platform, a learning pool and a children’s pool. The main goal of the design is to create a range of moods from the striking, colorful entrance area to the cozy changing rooms to the light and airy swimming hall with its expressive acoustic ceiling. Main materials such as glass, wood and concrete combine to create a cozy and sporty atmosphere. Located beside a pond, nature is brought into the hall through the 10m curtain wall and offers the swimmers a unique experience.
The unique shape of the building is defined by approximately 100 roof trusses containing around 255 m³ of glued laminated timber (GLT). More than 12,500 wooden slats were used for the curved acoustic ceiling.
Involvement in the project extended from construction detail to completion as part of the project team at studio gollwitzer architekten. More details here (only in german).
